How Lambeth Riding got it's name
1700's: Land was originally settled in 1746 by Benjamin Covington, who named his sheep farm "Lambeth"
1800's: The land changed ownership several times. William Thompson enlarged the old Covington home in 1843 and ran it as a tavern and inn. During the 1860's it was primarily used as a way station.
1900's: The Cox Family owned the property and their farm was named Maple Spring Farm. The land was purchased by Fortunato Builders in 1977
Today: 62 Homes consist of the Lambeth Riding Neighborhood
The builder for the majority of homes in Lambeth Riding was two brothers, Fran and Steve Fortunato. Steve Fortunato picked the name of Lambeth Riding. He was a dreamer and a man who always wore a suit so the name had to have "class." During World War II, there was a famous dance called the Lambeth Walk in England. In England political subdivisions are called a riding. A "riding" is one of the three administrative divisions of Yorkshire, England. Riding is a common name used in England and it is possible that a town is named Lambeth.
Where did the street names come from?
The Cox family wanted Steve Fortunato to use the farm name for the housing development but the Cox's were told they could name the streets. This information comes from Anne Cox Cain (daughter), hence the street name Cain Rue. Anne added Rue but it has no meaning for the farm or the family. The name of the Cox Farm was Maple Spring Farm which was a dairy-farm run by her father Norman Wesley Cox, hence the street names Norman's Lane, Wesley Drive, and Cox Road. Libby’s Circle is named after her mother Elizabeth who was called Libby. Anne's sister Alice Cox Fraser gives us the name for Fraser Place. That completes the Cox family (father, mother, and two daughters). The name Lambeth Place is keeping with the first part of the story.
